I’m so grateful for this time at Titanik during which I worked on two music + video works that will become part of my live music performance ”Mouth Noise”. These two compositions are called ”The Long Arc of Privilege” and ”Face Break”. Using methods ranging from satire to catharsis, they each work in different ways to deconstruct whiteness as material in the digital “everyday.” In addition, perhaps the most unique affordance of my time at the gallery was the ability to use the space after hours to rehearse my live set and make as much noise as I wanted. It’s a rare opportunity in my life to have a cave I can scream in without bothering anyone 🙂 I also met an amazing community of artists in Turku & Helsinki, starting conversations that will continue for a long time. I hope to return to Finland one day, and these relationships make that seem probable.
I also need to aknowledge the catastrophic genocide in Gaza that began while I was at the residency. I spent many, many late nights calling representatives in the US to demand a ceasefire and the end of US military support for Israel, and was able to attend 2 protests in Helsinki. I want to thank Titanik for closing the gallery and issuing a statement in solidarity with Palestine during the general strike on Oct 20.
