Jenni Kokkomäki: Concerning sameness and what was said
Concerning sameness and what was said is a series of videos looking into the performances and performatives at work in places where ideas of coherence, control and authority are formulated. We are called into social being somewhere between words and images that always already precede us. In the technologized era we are instantaneously available everywhere, yet within the predetermined linguistic and visual order. The interweaving of how we are present as ourselves with how we are presentably possible within the hierarchic matrixes of the predetermined field of culture interests me in this work.
My work is inspired by the questions of how the notions of power are transmitted and perceived in and through mediatized performance. The term power is used here to refererence the Finnish word valta, one of the significations of the English term. This signification connotes an idea of omnipresence, an inability to be permanently contained into any object, term or form – and be dealt with as such singular effect. This nature of unattainability and uncontainment bears an interesting similarity to what digital video work does – it is rarely as work confined into the gallery space where the artwork is shown, but it resides as is on my computer, in my external hard drives, as well as online. In my opinion, video work has a potential to perform a sence of untouchability similar to power – the actual work is not stopped nor does it cease when the projector is turned off within the marked space of a gallery. It will resume elsewhere. Also a video – with its potential for continuous looping as is in contrast to live performance – performs the sense of indefatigability as do coherence, authority and control.
Concerning sameness and what was said is realised in collaboration with sound designer Miro Mantere and performers Ida Backer, Sanne Katainen, Jonna Lehto, Jemina Mantere, Tekla Mantere, Are Nikkinen, Vili Nissinen, Ilona Pyykönen, Aino Päivinen and Teemu Päivinen.

Jenni Kokkomäki is an artist working in the field of Live Art, her body of work consists both of video installations and live performances. Kokkomäki has her MA degree in Live Art and Performance Studies (University of the Arts Helsinki). In recent years her works have been seen in galleries and theatres in Finland, Czech Republic, Norway and USA.

Concerning sameness and what was said on kolmikanavainen videoteos, jonka lähtökohtana on tarkastella kielellisen ja toiminnallisen suhdetta koherenssin, kontrollin ja auktoriteetin ideoiden muodostumiseen. Videolle toteutettujen esitysten kautta pyrin jäljittämään ja tuomaan näkyväksi hetkellisesti erilaisten valtojen jättämiä jälkiä. Jäljet muistuttavat jäljen jättäjästä, mutta tuovat samalla näkyväksi, ettei itse jälkeä tekevää voi nähdä, ottaa kiinni ja tyhjentää tekstin tai kuvan kautta.
Digitaalinen video kiinnostaa minua työvälineenä sen (näennäisesti) määrättömän ja virheettömän toistettavuuden vuoksi: lupaus rajaamattomuudesta paikkaan ja aikaan pitää sisällään omnipresenssin häivähdyksen, samoin kuin valta. Neutraloimalla sen yksi konkreettinen ilmentymä itse valta ei neutraloidu tai pääty. Samoin kun sammutan näytöt galleriatilassa, voi teos jatkua netissä ja säilyä sellaisenaan useissa digitaalisissa säilytysmuodoissa. Jatkuvassa ja täydellisessä toistettavuudessaan video korreloi myös valtafantasioiden kyseenalaistamattoman itsen toiveiden kanssa.
Videoiden valmistamiseen ovat lisäkseni osallistuneet äänisuunnittelija Miro Mantere, sekä esiintyjät Ida Backer, Sanne Katainen, Jonna Lehto, Jemina Mantere, Tekla Mantere, Are Nikkinen, Vili Nissinen, Ilona Pyykönen, Aino Päivinen ja Teemu Päivinen.
Videoinstallaation ja näyttelyosuuteni toteuttamista ovat tukeneet Koneen Säätiö ja Taiteen edistämiskeskuksen Audiovisuaalinen taidetoimikunta.
Jenni Kokkomäki on video- sekä esitystaiteen alalla työskentelevä taiteilija. Hän on valmistunut maisteriksi Live Art and Performance Studies -koulutusohjelmasta Taideyliopistosta. Kokkomäen videoinstaatioita ja ohjauksia on ollut esillä viime vuosina Suomessa, Tsekissä, Norjassa ja Yhdysvalloissa.
