In the New Year, Titanik Gallery will be joined by artists Kadi Jatta, Saros Grey and Lewis Moody to take part in the 2026 edition of A.i.R Artist Residency. The three artists’ intention for the residency involves developing an ongoing visual and sonic art project titled We Connect as Ocean (WCAO).
Initiated in 2024 in London by the Finnish-Gambian photographer and artist Kadi Jatta, We Connect as Ocean explores Afro-European identity in collaboration with the artist’s extended community. The project seeks to weave together individual stories aiming to inspire a progressive collective consciousness around Afro-Europeanism. How different, beautifully nuanced, and more truthful would the idea of Europe be, if more light was cast on the stories told by the continent’s Black population? This question lies at the heart of WCAO and is explored through visual and sonic world-building.
The two other members of the collective, Ghanaian-British poet Saros Grey and Australian-Italian musician Lewis Moody, initially joined WCAO as one-time collaborators. However, the three quickly realised the immense potential of their collaboration following their first session together in the recording studio.
During their time at the residency, the artists will be exploring the theme of progressive European cultural narratives through soundscapes, poetry, and visual representations derived from sound. Jatta will also be taking this opportunity to further develop the project’s visual components through image-making.
By bringing in verbal storytelling traditions from Grey and Jatta’s West African heritage, and weaving them into sonic landscapes shaped by Moody’s keyboards, the collective believes their project to be timely, educational, and deeply meaningful. It bridges history with contemporary culture, and hopes to inspire a future in which the contributions of Afro-European communities to the continent’s culture are seamlessly woven into our collective consciousness.

Vuoden 2026 alussa Titanik A.i.R. residenssiohjelmaan saapuvat taiteilijat Kadi Jatta, Saros Grey ja Lewis Moody. Residenssin aikana kolmikon tavoitteena on kehittää meneillään olevaa visuaalista ja äänitaidetta hyödyntävää projektia We Connect as Ocean (WCAO).
We Connect as Ocean sai alkunsa Lontoossa vuonna 2024 suomalais-gambialaisen valokuvaaja ja taiteilija Kadi Jattan aloitteesta. Projektissa tutkitaan afro-eurooppalaista identiteettiä yhteistyössä taiteilijan yhteisön kanssa – se pyrkii kutomaan yhteen yksilöllisiä tarinoita, joiden tavoitteena on inspiroida progressiivista ja kollektiivista tietoisuutta afro-eurooppalaisuudesta. Kuinka erilainen, kauniisti vivahteikas ja totuudenmukaisempi käsitys Euroopasta olisi, jos mantereen tummaihoisen väestön kertomille tarinoille annettaisiin enemmän näkyvyyttä? Tämä kysymys on WCAO-projektin ytimessä, ja sitä käsitellään visuaalisen ja äänellisen maailmanrakennuksen kautta.
Kollektiivin kaksi muuta jäsentä, ghanalais-brittiläinen runoilija Saros Grey ja australialais-italialainen muusikko Lewis Moody, liittyivät WCAO:hon kertaluonteisina yhteistyökumppaneina. Kolmikko huomasi kuitenkin nopeasti yhteistyönsä valtavan potentiaalin ensimmäisen yhteisen äänityssessionsa jälkeen.
Titanikin residenssin aikana taiteilijat tutkivat progressiivisten eurooppalaisten kulttuurikertomusten teemaa äänimaisemien, runouden ja äänestä johdettujen visuaalisten esitysten avulla. Jatta työskentelee myös projektin visuaalisten osien kehittämisen parissa.
Projektissa kietoutuu yhteen Greyn ja Jattan Länsi-Afrikan suullisen tarinankerronnan perinteet sekä Moodyn kosketinsoittimilla luodut äänimaisemat. Kollektiivi uskoo projektinsa olevan ajankohtainen, opettavainen ja syvästi merkityksellinen. Se yhdistää historian ja nykykulttuurin ja toivoo inspiroivansa tulevaisuutta, jossa afro-eurooppalaisten yhteisöjen panos maanosan kulttuuriin on saumattomasti kudottu kollektiiviseen tietoisuuteemme.
