    Syksyllä ennen vetäytymistään talvehtimaan syövät muurahaistyöläiset kekonsa yläosista kaikki energiapitoiset munat ja kotelot, jotka eivät muutenkaan selviäisi talvesta. Muurahaiset talvehtivat syvällä keon pohjakerroksessa, jossa ne painautuvat yhteen nyrkinkokoisiksi, lämpöä varaaviksi keriksi. Työläiset pääsevät vuorotellen kerän sisälle lämmittelemään. Muurahaiskuningatar pysyttelee kerän keskellä.
